Description

PXE_Installer-Recovery is intended for all VMware users to kickstart virtual machines, but has been developed primarily for the enterprise data center administrator to aid in streamlining server installations and troubleshooting.

This VMware appliance is ready to kickstart 32-bit and 64-bit CentOS-4.2 server installs on any hardware that can boot over the network, or to install new virtual machines - all you need to do is fire up the VM and start the DHCP daemon. There are several rescue and testing options included to help troubleshoot hardware or software problems.

PXE_Installer-Recovery has the full 32-bit and 64-bit single-CD server installation media for CentOS-4.2, menu options to use either rescue image over PXE, as well as a couple of placeholders for additional installs. This is the reason for the rather large size - after all, an appliance should be ready to use right out of the box, and not require additional downloading and configuration ;)

The base OS running the appliance is CentOS, which was stripped down to the essentials, and fully configured to serve as a stand-alone network installer for 192.168.100.0/24 - DHCP, DNS, TFT, and HTTP are all ready to roll - just start up dhcpd and begin installing:

/etc/init.d/dhcpd start

To enable dhcpd at boot, also run:

/sbin/chkconfig dhcpd on

The DHCP service was intentionally disabled so users could look around the VM without serving potentially incorrect IP addresses on the network. The VM is currently set up for host-only networking - to serve installs externally, just edit the VM settings and change the network interface to 'bridged'.

You are free to do whatever you wish with this VMware appliance, but the various GPL and BSD derived licenses with the included software still apply. Have fun! Michael
